Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment Reflection

During the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment unit, I learned that the Scientific Revolution was mostly about philosophers trying to understand the world and people’s purposes on Earth. With things like Copernicus and Ptolemy’s theory about the universe being geocentric or heliocentric.

During the Enlightenment, there were many figureheads during this time. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke both talked about whether or not people are born “evil” or it’s just a person’s experiences in life that decides how they behave; Montesquieu stated that the best form of government contained three branches with the separation of powers. Thomas Jefferson was influenced by these ideas, which then led to him writing the Declaration of Independence. All of these things contributed to the start of the English and French Revolutions.

Age of Discovery and Global Trade Reflection

During this unit, I learned that the Age of Discovery was mostly about European explorers discovering and/or conquering parts of the New World to gain more power, wealth, and to spread the Christian faith.

Many trade routes began to erupt between Europe, the Americas, and Africa, which is known as the Triangular Trade Route. Countries like China and Japan were not interested in outside goods, and the invented the policy of isolationism and set up enclaves to limit foreign influence.

Protestant Reformation Reflection

During the Protestant Reformation unit, I learned a variety of things. I learned that Martin Luther and John Calvin pretty much led the Protestant Reformation, along with Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

The Protestant Reformation, in a nutshell, was mostly about people of the Catholic faith who didn’t really agree with the Catholic Church’s rules, so they reformed from the Church to create their own sub-religion(s), Protestantism and Lutheranism, which contained the rules that they believed in.

How Did the Renaissance Change Man’s View of Man?

The Renaissance was the rebirth of mankind throughout 1300-1600, and people changed their “view” of how they wanted to live life. People began to focus more on themselves and put religion to the side, this was called humanism or individualism. There are a couple of ways that the Renaissance changed man’s view of man.

One way was through art, of course. There are many famous artworks one could list that came from the Renaissance, such as the Mona Lisa. In the Middle Ages, artwork and paintings weren’t as detailed, they were more religious-themed, 2D, and sometimes looked unrealistic. Artwork from the Renaissance, however, was quite the opposite. It was more realistic, textures were added for more of a 3D style, and was more focused on the art itself, but little hints of religion were still contained somewhere in it.

Another way was through literature. Literature from the Middle Ages was darker. It focused on sin, death, God and his punishment for mankind, etc. Renaissance literature was still dark here and there, but again, the focus was mostly on man, and how amazing mankind is. One person who really made a difference for literature during the Renaissance was William Shakespeare.

Next, there’s astronomy. Throughout the entire period of the Middle Ages, people believed that the universe was geocentric, drawn from a diagram by Ptolemy. The Church taught this to people for years, but this was later proven to be wrong, obviously. In the Renaissance, Copernicus proved Ptolemy wrong by creating a diagram of the universe that was heliocentric. His diagram is still used to this day.

Lastly, there were changes in anatomy. During the Middle Ages, it was taught that the ideas of the human body were controlled by zodiac signs, or the constellations. When the Renaissance period rolled around, Andreas Vesalius made changes to this concept. He created a diagram that was more realistic and actually based on anatomy and biology; how the human body really is.

This is how the Renaissance had changed man’s view of man. If it hadn’t, we’d still be following all of these ideas that were incorrect, such as the universe being geocentric and how the human body was based on the zodiac. The Renaissance was an amazing experience for people, and the world has learned a lot by focusing more on themselves.

Invenci Current Event

According to an article published on January 3rd, 2017, by Sara Chodosh, NASA brought up the idea of an inflatable dome that can be filled with water. The water would then freeze from the cold air, and the ice dome would protect astronauts from harmful radiation, due to the hydrogen atoms in the ice. Then, a second dome inside the outer ice dome would act as the actual living quarters.

Da Vinci Invenci Brainstorm

Human population is rising dramatically, even as you read this. Many people are starting to think about how to handle the issue of overpopulating the earth. NASA has began to start talking about sending people to Mars to see if it’s habitable. However, there’s no water on Mars. So, if we somehow got the money, built a dome-like structure on Mars with shipped oxygen and water inside? I don’t know how or if that could work, but it is an idea that can be taken into thought.

Current Event #1

As of Wednesday, a bill was introduced to the Virginia General Assembly that adults could be legally allowed to use marijuana under legislation. There have been hundreds of bills introduced by lawmakers since the beginning of 2019 aiming to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana use across the Commonwealth.

The bills presented also planned to decriminalize possession for people under the age of 21, instead opting for a penalty of about $50 for the first violation.

While marijuana is still illegal federally, Virginia Delegate Heretick’s bill encourages Virginia to join the other 35 states who have legalized marijuana to different degrees.

Open Mic

If I were to have the attention of the world for 15 minutes, I would probably talk about the rate of poverty in the world. I don’t know much about it, but I would tell the governments of every country in the world that there has to be something they can do to lower the poverty rate. According to a few sources, a little less than half of the world population lives on less than $10 a day. This, in my opinion, is very unfair and their has to be a way where countries can help and fix other economies without corrupting their own.

First Impression

Hi, my name is Sam, and I am currently a sophomore in high school. Some of my hobbies are making music and playing sports. As of right now, the only extra-curricular activity I’m a part of for my school is being on the football team. I want to go to college in the near future and I want to work as some form of an artist. This is my first impression for you.
